Kiki Smith Comes to Kingston!
On Friday, March 8, 2019, contemporary American artist Kiki Smith and her Columbia University graduate students toured four arts-related businesses in the Kingston Midtown Arts District.
Her first stop was at WORKSHOP Art Fabrication, the foundry that casts and fabricates her bronze art. Kiki led her students through the facility, and described the various processes required to produce metal sculpture.
The group moved on to Bailey Pottery Equipment where owners Anne and Jim Bailey spoke about their journey from art school to inventing equipment and creating a business. Today, they create, manufacture and sell pottery equipment to artists and schools worldwide.
Next door, R&F Handmade Paints is the leading manufacturer of encaustic paint and oil-based pigment sticks. A tour of the facility by founder Richard Frumess included an encaustic paint demonstration by artist Wayne Montecalvo.
The exciting tour of the MAD ended at Lite Brite Neon Studio, a custom neon, lighting and design studio. Founder Matt Dilling and his partner, artist Erika DeVries, showed a range of neon that included original gallery work, commercial signage and restoration.
