Please describe your business and your product(s).
Gallery Fifty5 is an inclusive Art Gallery and Pop-Up Event Space. We hold monthly art exhibitions as well as offer rentals to hold both public and private events such as panel discussions, workshops, concerts and more.
What are your best selling/most popular products?
As an art gallery, art is our best selling/most popular product.
Do you represent others’ work or do you only offer your own products? Tell us a little about how you develop (or accept) new products to offer to your customers.
Gallery Fifty5 represents other artists’ work, and we also have guest curators who rent our space to hold their own exhibitions. Our exhibition development has been based upon artists contacting the gallery or on our direct outreach to artists who are interested in showing their work.
We are in constant dialogue with artists and curators who are creating relationships and engaging the community. As strong advocates of the arts, we exhibit all styles and genres and strive to connect with artists who are in alignment with our concept of “Connect. Create. Collaborate.”
Are you an artist? If so, please describe what you do.
I (Marie) studied painting and printmaking at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. Right now, curation is my art, but when I do create I make mixed media 2D/3D sculpture utilizing found objects and objects from nature. I used to create large-scale oil paintings, but wanted to turn to a creative process that was sustainable. For the gallery’s November exhibition, artist Paul Heath (a.k.a. Dumb Won) and I are creating a show entitled, “It’s a Process,” where we will exhibit our own work and collaborate on a series of works as well.
What have you learned about being in an arts-related business that you wish you knew when you were just staring out? What advice would you give to others?
Patience is a virtue. Running an art gallery (any business really) takes an extreme amount of time, energy and dedication. Be patient. Build relationships. Make connections. Stay creative.
How has being in Kingston inspired, enhanced or changed your work? If you live or work in the Midtown Arts District, what do you like best about it? How long have you lived in Kingston or the Hudson Valley?
In Kingston, specifically Midtown, we are surrounded by innovative people who continuously fuel the gallery’s creative process. It’s a privilege to be a part of a community that is both supportive of and understanding about the importance of the arts. Midtown has what I like to call “true grit:” The people, the architecture and the local businesses are real, genuine and kind. I grew up in the Hudson Valley, and went through part of grade school in Kingston. It’s incredible to see how this area has flourished over the past 20 years, for better and for worse.
