Pauline Oliveros Deep Listening Plaza
The dedication ceremony to unveil the sign at Deep Listening Plaza at Broadway Commons in Midtown Kingston consecrated the space in honor of Pauline Oliveros’ enduring contributions to music and the sacred rituals of deep listening. The idea for the Deep Listening Plaza interpretative sign came from the Kingston Arts Commission shortly after Oliveros’ passing last year. The Arts Commission was instrumental in making sure that her life would be remembered in a meaningful way here in Kingston and the sign was unveiled on Friday, August 3.
Oliveros’ wife and creative collaborator, IONE, and vocalist/writer/performance artist, Lisa Barnard Kelley, who serves as Deep Listening Institute’s Events & Marketing Coordinator, designed and presented the ceremony, with collective support from MAD, the Arts Commission and the City of Kingston.
Kingston Mayor Steve Noble and Ward Mintz, President of Kingston Arts Commission, offered remarks to the gathered crowd of nearly 50 people. The sign at Deep Listening Plaza was designed by Rick Whelan, Ditto! Design! and fabricated by Timely Signs.
MAD is proud to have played a role in creating this space for all to enjoy and appreciate the legacy of Pauline Oliveros.
