Kingston Arts District Subcommittee Meeting Minutes 9/15/2015
Kingston Arts District Subcommittee Meeting
Time and Date: September 15, 2015.12:00-1:00
Location: Green Room at UPAC Kingston, NY
Chaired by: Ruth Ann Frank, DOD Bardavon/UPAC and Anne Bailey, Principal, Bailey Pottery Equipment and Ceramic Supply
Purpose: To discuss the Kingston Arts District Mission Statement
Ruth Ann and Anne introduced themselves to the group and an informal dialogue began as a means of getting to know one another and allowing newcomers to express concerns for and opportunities in forming an arts district in Kingston. Ruth Ann and Anne recapped some of what had been accomplished and talked about in previous meetings and went on to tackle the job at hand: the mission statement.
It was determined by the group that the current mission statement was too long and the language did not capture the intent and motives for such a district. It was determined by Ruth Ann and Anne that it should be re-written and broken into two parts, a shorter mission statement accompanied by a vision statement which would capture the aspirations for such a district.
The result was a new mission statement:
MISSION
Our mission is to revitalize and enrich the community through a unified arts focus that builds upon the City’s existing assets and reputation as an arts-friendly place in which to live, work and play.
VISION
To establish a clear arts identity for the City’s distressed urban center;
To create distinct physical boundaries that define the District, welcome visitors, and connect the City’s Uptown, Midtown, and Rondout neighborhoods;
To strengthen the City’s economic base and cultural tourism industry by drawing new arts-related organizations, businesses, artists and craftspeople;
To foster communication and collaboration between artists, businesses, others residents, and local government in order to support common goals and a thriving arts-infused community;
To create arts events and educational opportunities that demonstrate the power the arts have to improve our quality of life.
